Linda Loppa intervista: Patrizia Josefa Antonacci

1.Patrizia, at the University of Bari you wrote your thesis on “Footwear: civilisation and art in the History of Fashion”. In 2008 you attended a seminar at the Villa Bardini at the Fondazione Roberto Capucci a seminar on “Colours” and before you attended a cutting and tailoring course at the Atelier de Chirico at Bari and had several job experiences in the fashion sector in Puglia. What made you decide to attend the master in Footwear design?

Ho sempre saputo quello che volevo fare nella mia vita, ed era lavorare nella moda come creativa. Ho studiato per tre anni all’Università, e mi sono resa conto che oltre ad essere necessario una buona cultura teorica del settore moda, non potevo trascurare la parte pratica di questo mestiere. Ho sempre avuto una predilezione per la calzatura così ho deciso di specializzarmi con un master. Dopo aver vagliato alcune scuole, ho scelto il Polimoda perché era l’unica che ti offriva l’opportunità di apprendere a realizzare da sola le scarpe, come un’apprendista che va a imparare il mestiere a bottega.

My whole life I have always known that I wanted to work as a fashion designer. I studied 3 years at University, and I realized that as well as having a good theoretical culture in the fashion field, it is also necessary a practical knowledge of this profession. I have always felt a preference for footwear design and therefore I chose to specialize with a master in footwear. After having evaluated some different schools, I choose Polimoda because it’s the only school offering the possibility of realizing the craftsmanship of shoemaking.

2.When I asked you for witch designer you would like to work you named Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier and Maison Martin Margiela. It seems you are attracted by the ironic or the unexpected “clin d’oeil” of fashion. Viktor & Rolf would suite you as well…Where is this ironic eye coming from? Do you think fashion is too serious?

La moda è lo specchio della società e dei gusti del tempo in cui viviamo.
Con la nascita del fast fashion e dei prodotti di consumo di massa, la moda si è “democratizzata” i prezzi sono scesi e le produzioni sono aumentate, incrementando l’omologazione tra gli individui. Le scarpe e i vestiti hanno perso la loro dignità di un tempo, in questo periodo l’unico obiettivo è vendere. Per questo penso che la moda sia troppo seria e che si prenda troppo sul serio. Moschino, JPG, Margiela, V&R sono tra quei Brands che, fanno parte del sistema moda, ma allo stesso tempo ne prendono le distanze con autoironia. Penso che questa sia l’atteggiamento giusto anche nella vita: La vita è un gioco, e non vale la pena viverla senza un pizzico di follia e creatività.

Fashion is the mirror of our society and reflects the taste of contemporary living.
With the birth of fast fashion and the mass consumption products, fashion today is for everyone, the prices have gone down and the production is growing, increasing the homologation among the individuals.
Shoes And Clothes have lost their value of old times, in this period the only target is to sell. For that reason I find fashion too serious, and that the fashion world takes themselves too seriously. Moschino, Gaultier, Margiela, V&R are part of the fashion system, but in the same time they keep a distance with self-irony. I think that this approach applies to our everyday living: life is a game, and it is not worth living it without a bit of craziness and creativity.

3.A shoe is complex and this master was a challenge…what did you learned?

Ho imparato tante cose. Ma l’ultima cosa che ho imparato, che secondo me è l’insegnamento più importante è quella di non avere paura. Prima nascondevo i miei disegni e le mie idee, per timore di essere giudicata; adesso invece se vengo criticata, mi dispiace solo per le persone che non riescono a guardare oltre un foglio di carta.

I have learned a lot of new thinks. But the most important thing I learned was not to be afraid. In the beginning I was afraid to show my sketches and my ideas, I was scared to be judged, now if a get criticism, I feel sorry only for the people that couldn’t look beyond the paper.

4.Can you talk more about the inspiration of the collection?

Mi piace molto il cinema espressionista Tedesco, la forza del suo linguaggio visivo l’uso del chiaroscuro e l’importanza delle ombre. Per la mia collezione, ho approfondito quest’ ultimo aspetto in maniera più ampia, esaminando l’ombra nelle fotografie di Erwin Blumenfeld e Lee Friedlander, nelle installazioni di Kumi Yamashita, e nelle performance di danza dei Chunky Move Pilobolus e momix.
Ho rielaborato immagini, studiato ombre e prospettive, ho segato forme per calzature per creare nuove silhouette, e ho cercato nuovi materiali, sperimentando con vari tipi di silicone. Alla fine sono riuscita a creare quello che avevo in mente.

I really like German Expressionist Cinema, its power of visual language, the use of chiaroscuro and the importance of shadows. For my collection, I went deeper the shadows in a largest way, studying them on Erwin Blumenfeld e Lee Friedlander photographies, on Kumi Yamashita works, on Chunky Move, Pilobolus and Momix dance performances. I have developed images, I have studied shadows and perspective, I have sewed lasts to create new shapes and I have searched new materials, experimenting with several kind of silicon. Finally I have created what I had in my mind.

5.How was living in Florence?

Il bilancio è abbastanza positivo, mi sono sentita a casa. La città è molto bella, molto stimolante dal punto di vista culturale; ho conosciuto tante persone speciali che resteranno per sempre nel mio cuore. Ho solo un’unica richiesta: per favore abolite la salita del Polimoda!

It was a positive experience, I felt at home. The city is very beautiful and offers lot of cultural experiences; I met many special persons that will have a special place in my heart forever. I have only one wish: please destroy the rise of the Polimoda hill!
