LONG TERM TREND

SOBJECT

SUBJECT / OBJECT

As a matter of fact, merchandise has been consuming us.

Living in a circular time, we are moving forward blindly with no concrete goals nor direction. At the age of uncertainties, we are struggling to identify ourselves, and often feel the need to be distinguished. One of the most common as seen is to purchase merchandise that could “provide” us identity. The rise of trend and luxury business is the best evidence. It has contagiously influenced us in believing that an object could define subject. Creating the mentality of needing the unnecessities in life, that takes away the subject in a person. Regardless of the speed in cycle of fast paced digital driven society – we can never detach our anthropological instinct. For instant, (Slide 04) D&G created a series of perfume revolving the idea of human’s fundamental question: “Who am I? Who do I want to be?” Each fragrance is named after archetypes like The Empress, The Moon and bears a significant number to indicate consumer’s identity.

On the other hand, even functional product became an instrument to reflect us. (Slide 03) SMEG has a series of refrigerator covered with different “skin”, aimed to project personality and identity. The interior of human is all relying on exterior decorations adapting from products. When identity is compressed into a product, the product consumes the consumer. As we no longer define ourselves but the perfume. Hence, the consumer is now an object, consumed by product. To reverse this cycle, returning subject to a person is to delete the unused needs in contemporary living and to survive with essence of necessities in life.

Benedetta Barzini / Pittacus of Mytilene (from The Seven Sages of Greece)

Pittacus of Mytilene (c. 640-568 BCE) was the son of Hyrradius and one of the Seven Sages of Greece. He was a native of Mytilene and the Mytilenaean general who, with his army, was victorious in the battle against the Athenians and their commander Phrynon. In consequence of this victory the Mytilenaeans held Pittacus in the greatest honour and presented the supreme power into his hands. After ten years of reign he resigned his position and the city and constitution were brought into good order.
