From horse hair to fish bones, silk and feathers, these are just some of the materials used to express the vision lying behind the masterpiece garments created by Alexander McQueen.

This fashion artist, because that is what he was, an artist and then a designer, left the world too soon and as from his own words: “There is no way back for me. I am going to take you on journeys you’ve never dreamed were possible.”

And that is exactly what he did. His creations are now the center of the world’s attention, his name is pronounced in ovation and awe, his brilliance has found its place and is dominating the world.

These past months could be considered a standing ovation to the genius of McQueen. Starting with the dress of the century’s wedding of Kate Middelton, also if not designed directly by Alexander when his name was pronounced to the media all listeners bowed in reverence in front of the its power. Two of the most famous luxury department stores in Manhattan Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman have dedicated their windows to the designer, exhibiting for the first a collection of colorful summery garments while the second showed his masterpieces among which the renowned “Red Birds” dress.

This wave of fame found its magnitude with the exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York curated by Andrew Bolton. A sanctuary for fashion aficionados and however wants to see firsthand the beauty and dept of Alexander McQueen’s passion and struggle.

After his suicide many things have been said about his work but what resonated is the despair that transpired from his visions, his profound struggle with life was evident especially in his darkest collections.

Some said he was irreparably disturbed. In reality he had issues, like each and every human being but unfortunately he didn’t have the strength or support to overcome them. Probably this deep uncertainty was the source of his marvelous visions and somehow in his profound fragility he was courageous enough to bring them to life.

Each of his runways depicts a story that goes beyond the mere concept of presenting a clothing collection, Alexander McQueen put on a full show designed to impress and shock. He wanted to make his audience think and leave a mark on them that will define not only them but their awareness about the collection. The clothes presented on each runway transcend fashion; they were the result of an elaborated story written for a purpose.

It has to be said that his inspiration didn’t come only from his soul. He sought inspiration from the world, ancient and modern, natural and concrete. All these elements are visible on his runways. From the chess board game inspired by the Harry Potter movies to the “Golden Rain” runway forced to be name changed to “Rain” because of its too explicit sexual connotation.

The most shocking elements walking through the dark galleries of the Met dedicated to McQueen are the use of masks designed by Guido Palau to hide or embellish the mannequins and the accurate use of nature’s elements not only in the fabrics but also in the accessories, like little crocodiles as shoulder pads or real flowers to create gowns.

Mc Queen’s vision is a gift to the fashion world, showing how a garment and a runway can become expression of a personal story and point of view. His legacy lives on.

L’artista di moda, perche’ questo e’ cio’ che era, un artista e poi un designer, ha lasciato il mondo prematuramente e con le sue parole: “Non c’e’ via di ritorno per me. VI portero’ in un viaggio che non avete mai pensato fosse possibile.”

E questo e’ cio’ che ha fatto. Le sue creazioni sono il centro dell’attenzione di tutto il mondo, il suo nome viene pronunciato  con ovazione e rispetto, la sua creativita’ ha trovato la sua collocazione e sta dominando il mondo. Questi ultimi mesi possono essere considerati una standing  ovation per il genio McQueen. Iniziando con l’abito del matrimonio del secolo di Kate Middleton, il quale,  anche se non creato direttamente dalla mano di McQueen,  ha fatto inchinare con riverenza i media e gli appasionati al pronunciare la sua casa di moda come stilista per l’evento. Inoltre due dei piu’ importanti grandi magazzini del lusso di New York, Saks Fifth Avenue e Bergdorf Goodman hanno dedicato le loro vetrine al designer, esibendo il primo una selezione di abiti estivi mentre il secondo i pezzi iconici tra cui il “Red Bird”. Quest’ondata di notorieta’ continua con l’attesissima mostra curata da Andrew Bolton al Metropolitan Museum di New York. Considerato un santuario per gli appasionati della moda che fino al 7 Agosto possono ammirare la bellezza e la prodondita’ della visione di McQueen.

Dopo il suo suicidio sono state dette molte cose ruguardo al suo lavoro ma cio’ che ha creato piu’ scompiglio e’ la profonda disperazione che traspare dalla sua visione, la sua lotta interiore con la vita era evidente in particolar modo nelle sue collezioni piu’ dark. Alcuni hanno detto che era irrecuperabilmente disturbato. In realta’, aveva problemi, come tutti, ma sfortunatamente non aveva la forza o il supporto necessario per superarli. Molto probabilmente questa instabilita’ era la fonte della sua fenomenale visione e in qualche modo la sua fragilita’ gli ha dato il coraggio di portarla in vita.

Ogni sfilata delinea una storia che va oltre il mero concetto di presentare degli abiti, Alxander MCQueen organizza un vero e proprio spettacolo che ha lo scopo di impressionare e quasi scioccare. Ha sempre voluto che il suo pubblico se ne andasse con un segno che li cambiasse e che gli facesse pensare alla collezione. Gli abiti presentati sulle passerelle trascendono la moda, erano il risultato di una elaborata storia scritta per un motivo. Va detto che la sua ispirazione non veniva solo dalla sua anima, ma dal mondo intero, antico e moderno, naturale e concreto. Tutti questi  elementi  sono riscontrabili nelle varie collezioni. Dalla scacchiera tratta dal film di Harry Potter alla “Golden Rain” obbligata ad essere rinominata “Rain” per il forte rimando esplicitamente sessuale. Cio’ che piu’ lascia una sorta di disagio visitando le varie gallerie del Met dedicate all’artista, sono le maschere create da Guido Palau, utilizzate per celare o abbellire i volti dei manichini. Anche l’uso della natura in maniera estrema per creare accessori come i mini alligatori trasformati in spalline, o gli abiti interamente reallizzati con fiori.

La visione di McQueen e’ un dono al mondo della moda, dimostrando come un abito e una passerella possono diventare l’espressione di una storia personale e di un punto di vista. La sua eredita’ verra’ tramandata nel tempo.
